Hubby and I have incorporated afternoon dessert dates into our routine as part of our New Year’s Resolution. Bed time is still pretty hectic at our house, so a quick trip out during the afternoon seems to work better for our family right now.
Inspired by Bruce Feiler’s The Secrets of Happy Families, we’ve also started Family Meeting Nights once a week. This week was our first one and so far so good. We discussed discipline strategies, scheduling conflicts, and our never ending to do list. The first meeting went well and hopefully will benefit the overall house, but next time we’ve decided to bring snacks! The picture is of my super cool, handy dandy notebook to take meeting notes. I got it in South Africa. It still has the price tag in rand 🙂 – I know I’m a nerd 🙂
Ladybug is becoming quite the little helper around the house. I’m always amazed by how much a 2 year old can accomplish. Her newest “chore” accomplishment is being able to put away silverware in the silverware drawer and loading dirty silverware in the dishwasher. A few forks went into the drawer backwards, but overall she did a fantastic job! She also loves putting the soap into the dishwasher.
As we get back into the swing of things in the New Year, we are slowly getting back to having some of our regular play dates. We hosted this week. My dear friend is due with her second ( a little girl) at the end of March and I’m so excited to meet her new addition. Doesn’t she look beautiful!!! Look how much these kids have grown since our first “date.” Clearly their eccentric taste in unique clothing continues.
Musicians in the Family
My brother and his fiancee (this is exciting and new – Christmas Day proposal!!!) have been hanging at our house and the kids are totally in love. Ladybug watches her Uncle perform on the television when he has live performances that are recorded and I think he is up there with Santa Claus with regard to awe! His fiancee is fantastic with kids and both of my munchkins enjoyed playing with her. Since both are professional musicians, my kids got a very early introduction to French Horn and Clarinet – and even jammed a little via tambourine and glockenspiel.
Book Club Picks
Our MNO Book Club pick this month was “The Signature of All Things,” by Elizabeth Gilbert. My mother may never forgive me for encouraging her to read this book. The novel starts out so strong and so promising. Clearly Gilbert is an artist with a pen and an amazing researcher. The prose is so very rich. I actually warned one of the ladies in the book club to give herself some time because the book was good, but it had a lot of words….lol Sadly, about halfway through the reading became more tedious and less entertaining. Overall, I have a lot of respect for the artistry involved in creating this novel, but was sorely disappointed with the bulk of the book and the weak conflict resolution. Next up is “The Girls of Atomic City: The Untold Story of the Women Who Helped Win World War II,” by Denise Kiernan.
Family Adventure Day
Every other week my husband and I try to take the kids and have a nuclear family adventure. This week has been unbelievably cold, so our usual park or hike plans were out. So, we took our first visit to the Knoxville Art Museum. We were pleasantly surprised with how easy it was to navigate with two kids in strollers. Ladybug has a blast identifying animals in the paintings and was fascinated by the idea that people used paint to create these images. I may have a budding artist. Doodle Bug was taken with several of the glass pieces. And yes, that scared me….lol The museum also has a really cool room called the Creative Corner, which was perfect for letting the kids run around and get out some pent up energy. The room had a couple of easels, a light table, and a huge “wall light board,” which both my toddlers loved! So did my husband 🙂 The museum is free admission, but we didn’t make it out completely free and clear, because the gift shop was unexpectedly awesome and had tons of activities and books geared towards art appreciation for youngsters. I look forward to sharing some of our fabulous finds on the blog soon!
Have a great week everyone! and a belated Happy New Year!!!
