Kite Flying Day is February 8th! Be ready with this adorable, toddler and preschool friendly book featuring our favorite little monkey, Curious George and this incredibly simple, but super fun kite craft. It’s low on the messy scale and high on the fun scale. The kite that results can be flown indoors or out!
Materials:
- Card stock or construction paper (coloring of your choice)
- Scissors
- Kite Template
- Markers, crayons, other creative utensils
- Crepe paper (streamers)
- Double sided tape
Step 1: Cut out paper kites! Using the template linked above and laying it over the card stock before you cut will make this step very simple. We used yellow, blue, and pink card stock. It’s a little sturdier against wind and in the hands of toddlers.
Step 2: Let the kids decorate their paper kites in the manner of their choosing.
Step 3: Attach some streamers made of the crepe paper using tape, glue, glue-dots, or anything else sticky you feel brave enough to hand over to the toddlers.
Step 4: If it’s windy fly outside, if not create your own wind. We recruited our local box fan!
A huge Mary Poppins Fan, I also took advantage of this day to introduce my kids to one of my favorite songs: “Let’s Go Fly a Kite!” The clip below is one of my favorite scenes from “Saving Mr. Banks,” the amazing story of how Mary Poppins left the pages of a book to become a movie. This is the perfect sing-a-along song while enjoying your own kites! That’s it! Go! Read! Play! Sing! Don’t forget to show me your kites on Instagram and Facebook!
