As a new mother I have been overwhelmed by the number of people who want to celebrate the arrival of our baby. People whom I have only spoken to in passing and neighbors with whom I have only ever exchanged pleasantries are now approaching the door bearing gifts. Some random, wonderful person has even started leaving coupons for diapers and wipes in our mailbox. Thank you mystery coupon giver!
We have been blessed with friends who consult our registry and purchase items we believe we need. Ultimately, we have discovered it is up to Little Pants as to which items are truly acceptable 🙂 We have also been given a number of gift certificates to Babys R Us and Target. The most commonly given gifts have actually been clothes. We have so many cute little outfits for the baby girl that we are unlikely to actually be able to get her in all of them before she grows out of them. We had to start putting her in Christmas outfits at the end of October just to make an honest effort of taking thank you pictures in all the outfits! First Christmas tree ornaments were also immensely popular gifts.
Some of the best gifts we received were not purchased, but made. We were gifted a quilt with Little Pants name sewn into the fabric and a small toy engraved with her name. A giant box of cookies also arrived with fondant icing; one of which was a picture frame enclosing her very first picture. The extra thought and care made the gifts so very special. They have also been inspiration to try to increase the amount of crafting that occurs in my own home. I would love to learn how to knit, crochet, and put fancy fondant on anything really.
The absolute best gifts were that of time; either time that went into making a homemade gift or time that was gifted to me. There is no greater feeling in the world than looking around and seeing many loving hands reaching out to help and hold your baby while you take a shower or a nap! We live far enough away from family that this isn’t a daily occurrence and each time it happens I feel so blessed.
Little Pants is 5 months old now, but many of these gifts are still very much in use and enjoyed. Other gifts, such as dinners prepared by family or time given to let me take a quick mommy moment, though consumed are preserved forever in my grateful memory. As a new mom I am often asked for advice on what to buy for baby showers and new little ones. What gifts do you remember most and treasure from when your babies were born?
