Not Just a Hearer But A Doer by Yolanda Shanks is a 31 day devotional focused on truly living God’s plan for our lives, rather than just going through the motions. Shanks believes that simply sitting in the pews, saying the prayers, and singing the songs at church are not enough. She has authored and published this devotional in the hopes of encouraging and inspiring readers to take action based on Scripture and assure God a more active and functional place in our lives.
The subject headings from the table of contents for Days 1 – 31 are listed below:
Contained within each day’s devotional are the following subtitles:
- Additional Memory Scripture:
- Personalize Today’s Scripture Text:
Each day or section begins with a short description of the day’s devotional, often utilizing examples or stories from the author’s life or modern society to help prepare the reader for the devotional. An observation or Scripture passage relevant to the situation is then provided. Background regarding that particular Scripture is given to assist the reader with interpreting the observation. The author then offers an interpretation of the Scripture to better help the reader fully appreciate the day’s devotion. Application refers the reader to a list of action steps or directives geared towards getting the reader to apply the Scripture in everyday life. At the end of each section a space is reserved to personalize the Scripture text in the reader’s own words.
Reasons to Read: Not Just a Hearer But A Doer succeeds in creating an action plan for rejoicing in the Lord during ordinary days. The devotionals are short and very doable even for busy individuals. There is also a Volume II available if you enjoy Volume I.

About the Author:
Multi-published author, speaker, blogger, teacher, wife, grandmother—Yolanda Shanks wears many hats, but the one she most resonates with is her role as an advocate for living life to its fullest. Shanks’ award-winning first book, Destined to Live, Despite Me, continues to be a source of hope for those battling effects from a prior suicide attempt. It garnered an enthusiastic Kirkus review, which stated the book was “a commendable guide for finding meaning after considering suicide.” Her second book, Not Just a Hearer but a Doer (released June 2012) challenges the body of Christ to act upon scripture. In the Fall of 2012, she released a third project, entitled Destined to Live, Despite Me – A Cause to Be Thankful.
