Oso bajo el sol by Stella Blackstone and Debbie Harter is a board book from the Barefoot books Spanish and English bilingual books collection. Oso (an adorable, personable bear) loves to play in all kinds of weather. He plays in the sunshine, sings in the rain, and flies his kite when it’s windy. He also learns a little bit about which weather is most likely to occur in each season.

We created a simple weather wheel craft to compliment this book. We identified common weather scenarios and their Spanish translations. Building on the Spanish activity included in the Little Learners Preschool Weather Pack I got to create for Enchanted Home Schooling Mom, we added clip art and Spanish phrasing to our wheel. The wheel now hangs by our door for use when we go outside in the morning. We turn the arrow to the weather we see outside and then practice the appropriate Spanish weather phase. It’s a great way to repeat and practice our new phrases!
Materials List:
Sturdy Paper Plate
Blue Construction Paper
Sturdy Arrow (we used light weight cardboard, cardstock would work well too)
1 Paper Fastener
Little Learners Preschool Weather Pack
************you will also need a pencil, glue, a marker, and scissors
I placed a sturdy paper plate on top of a piece of light blue construction paper. Using a pencil, I traced the base of the paper plate and then cut out the resulting circle. Ladybug (2.5 years) glued the blue circle into the center of the paper plate. I used a straight edge (seriously, could not find a ruler anywhere in the house) to draw four equal parts. We then used the Spanish activity cards from the Little Learners Preschool Weather Pack to populate each section. Ladybug is a big fan of glue, so she was happy to paste on the pictures. I then read each Spanish phrase and had her point to the corresponding image. She then helped glue the phrases, also cut from the Spanish activity cards, onto the appropriate place on the paper plate.
I sketched a small arrow on some brightly colored cardboard from a shoe box and cut out the arrow. I used the scissors to make a small puncture in the center of the wheel and helped Ladybug insert the paper fastener through the end of the arrow, construction paper, and paper plate. We then read through the book and identified scenarios in the book that matched our weather wheel. Hace viento (it’s windy), is shown in the image below.
There are more than four different weather conditions listed in the book. When we tried to use the wheel to describe the weather outside, Ladybug wanted to use “Está nublado,” or it’s cloudy, which of course was not included in our initial weather wheel. So, we went back to the drawing board and recreated the blue construction paper circle and divided it into 6 parts instead of only 4. We still used images from the Little Learners Preschool Weather Pack, but I simply wrote in the following weather conditions for this wheel.
- Está lloviendo. – It’s raining.
- Hace sol. – It’s sunny.
- Hace frío. – It is cold.
- Está nevando. – It’s snowing.
- Está nublado. – It’s cloudy.
- Hace viento. – It is windy.

LOL, my daughter is a big fan of glue as well, me not so much :). Any gluing activities means glue on my table, glue in her hair, caps that are never put on properly, if they are at all, and many times she cuts the glue with the cap, or takes a popsicle stick to dig out the glue she uses. Oh well, at least it’s not permanent marker ;).

Melanie – Our arch nemesis is play dough – it has officially been banned to outdoor only use….lol
Ha! I despise play dough. My son goes crazy for glue and in fact talks about what we might need a glue stick for tomorrow at bedtime EVERY night!
I love that this is a bilingual activity! We might have to check this book out soon!
Sara – I soooo hear the the glue at bed time talk in my head 🙂 LOL
I’m so glad that you like the book and activity. It’s been a great way for us to practice 🙂 Let me know if you end up making a weather wheel – I’d love to see!! 🙂
