Poppins Book Nook is focused on composers this month. This is a fabulous fit for our family and especially for my two littles who are very focused on music. Recently, my eldest has begun making up her own songs. The most recent compositions feature a woman searching everywhere for the craft supplies. Since they aren’t in the bin, she tries the closet, but it’s tough because some craft supplies can be very hard to find. It’s hilarious! And clearly based on real life experience 😉
HEY! Make sure you scroll down to enter the composer themed giveaway!!!
We read “My First Classical Music Book,” a collection of short snippets describing music, composers, and instruments accompanied by musical selections. Each track is short (just a minute or so) and is paired with a question that encourages the listener to focus on a particular aspect of the music. For example, “The Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy,” is the selected track for one of my favorite composers, Tchaikovsky. The prompt for this musical excerpt is to listen for a “tinkly” sound. After reading and listening to several of the highlighted composers, we decided to make some music of our own.
We are blessed to have a piano in the house. So, for our activity we simply focused on identifying the black and white keys. We identified middle C and tapped out several rhythms. I then allowed them free access to the keyboard and let them create their own songs. It amazes me how little prompting they need for this activity. I think we may have a future songwriter in the house. So proud of my little budding musicians 🙂
