Total Christmas Makeover
31 Devotions to Celebrate With Purpose
by Melissa Spoelstra
I’ve always loved Christmas. When I found out my husband and I were expecting, I immediately began to dream about all the wonderful traditions we would do as a family every December; gingerbread houses, holiday cookies, caroling, and of course midnight mass. It was a very rude awakening when my sweet baby girl howled incessantly the second I tried to put her down in her bouncy chair in the kitchen. Forget the Christmas cookies and gingerbread houses. The caroling and midnight mass were way past her bedtime and if we’re being completely honest, past my bedtime too!
As the years move on and the kids are more and more able to participate in our family traditions, life has gotten quite a bit more fun. Yet, I haven’t forgotten my lesson that even when the cookies can’t get done and the caroling isn’t sung, Christmas is not a lost cause. It means so much more. It is a time for rejoicing and reflecting on the true Savior, Jesus Christ. Even when life is hard at Christmas, Jesus is still there.
In that same spirit, Melissa Spoelstra offers us a chance to take a moment and spend time with Jesus this season.
Part devotional, part testimonial, and all focused on celebrating Christmas with purpose, “Total Christmas Makeover” gives Mom time to take a moment to strengthen her relationship with Jesus in what can be the busiest season of the year.
“Total Christmas Makeover” is divided into three major areas of focus for advent and the beginning of the Christmas season; ritual, relationships, and rest. There are 31 entries meant to be read one a day. Each section begins with scripture, the author’s thoughts, and prayer. Questions for reflection and a practical approach (i.e. not trying to make gingerbread houses with an infant in arms) to living out God’s message are offered. The practical approaches include reflecting on your own behavior in the family unit, taking the time to write someone a personal note, and suggestions for personal journaling or prayer.
I hope you take a moment or more this holiday season to enjoy time with Jesus with “Total Christmas Makeover.”
