My kids have loved learning about farm life with Mother Goose Time this month! Arguably, their favorite part has been pretend play. They have acted out farm life as animals, farmers, and of course, tractor drivers.
Dance ‘n Beats included a simple set of instructions for how to make a tractor costume. My kids loved this idea and got a lot of mileage out of the costume, so I’m sharing the directions below.
Note: The big wheels should be on the back and the small ones on the front……….. The kids loved it anyway ๐
Tractor Costume
Your Supplies
- recycled cardboard box
- string or ribbon (or suspenders)
- paint
- scissors
- tape
- stapler
- cardboard tubes
- paper plates
Create It
Cut the bottom and top flaps off of the cardboard box. Reinforce inside corners with tape.
Invite children to decorate their boxes as desired to look like tractors.
Consider attaching paper plates for wheels and paper tubes for pipes.
Staple the ribbon or string to the box to make straps so that children can step inside their tractors and wear them as they dance. We used some suspenders left over from my son’s role as ring bearer in my brother’s wedding ๐
How can you make your body move like a tractor?
The following song was great fun to sing as we danced in our tractor costume. This song and music was included on the musical CD that comes with Mother Goose Time’s Down On the Farm monthly themed curriculum.
The wheels on the tractor go
Round and round
Round and round
Round and round
The wheels on the tractor go round and round
All day long.
Here are just a few of the recommended dance moves to move your body like a tractor!
Combinations of Dance Moves
Rockstar: Jump up and down while reaching arms up and nodding.
Snowball: Bend forwards and backwards at the waist while rolling arm over arm.
Rock and Roll: Bend side to side while rolling arm over arm.
Free Dance
Play the song and invite children to sit on the floor or in a chair and dance freely.
How can they move creatively while seated?
Halloween Bonus
My kids enjoyed this costume so much, my son chose to wear it as his Halloween costume this year ๐
I was pretty impressed that he was able to sit down in the stroller wearing the costume, but he did so with little difficulty. One of our neighbors gave the kids pumpkin lights, which Owl promptly stuck in the top of his costume. He said it turned it into a Halloween tractor ๐
Have you and your family made any fun costumes this month?
