Yummi Pouch provided me with a package of 4 Yummi Pouch Brights in exchange for my honest review.
As a Mom of an almost 15 month old, I have really enjoyed using Yummi Pouches, but more importantly my little girl loves Yummi Pouches! She reaches for them out of the refrigerator and claps when she sees them emerge from the diaper bag or purse. For Itty Bitty the pouches offer a brightly, colorful, fun alternative to sitting in the high chair and using a spoon. They are an easy way to give her something healthy that she is still happy to eat while we are on the go, at the park, at the gym, or in transit to any number of other places
Itty Bitty loves yogurt, but sitting her down to feed her yogurt isn’t always possible and often requires a complete outfit change. Still, I want her to have healthy items like yogurt. Aside from green peas and carrots, she’s also not a huge vegetable fan, but if they are made into a smoothie and offered in a Yummi Pouch, into her little tummy they go.
You certainly can buy premade packages, but they quickly become significantly more expensive than filling your own pouches with food you make at home. You also have a lot more control about what foods your child ingests and from where those foods originate. Historically, we had some unfortunate and unsatisfactory experiences with reusable food pouches. We loved the idea, but the pouches we purchased at local baby stores did not meet our needs.
Yummi Pouches were far superior to other reusable food pouches we have used in my family’s opinion, because the area used to fill the pouch is separate from the location on the pouch from the nozzle and because the pouches are easy to fill, easy to clean, and the Itty Bitty didn’t reopen them. As shown below (Yummi Pouches on the left and a comparable product on the right), the nozzle is separate from the area used for filling and the pouch itself is larger. The snap closure on the product seen on the right also quickly became a game for Itty Bitty to open and we haven’t had that trouble with the zipper opening at the top of the Yummi Pouch.
Yummi Pouch offers multiple recipes on their web site for fruit and vegetable purees as well as meat and grains. Itty Bitty will happily eat any of the fruit purees. Other favorites include Pear Oatmeal and Lentil and Squash puree. The purees make it possible to combine vegetables with just enough fruit to entice little mouths and the Yummi Pouch makes it a cinch to deliver.
If you aren’t familiar with Yummi Pouches, they are essentially reusable food pouches with an easy to open, fill, and close zipper top. They are sturdy bags that hold up to 6 ounces of food. There is a nozzle attached to the side of the bag through which little ones can gain access to the food inside. Yummi Pouches are dishwasher safe, freezer safe, BPA and phthalate free, recyclable, and fully CPSP compliant.
Yummi Pouches are very easy to clean and are considered dishwasher safe. The pouch itself cleans nicely, but I found it easier just to rinse with soap and warm water immediately after we were done with the pouch. The lid to the pouch is a little trickier to get clean if you have stored food in the pouch for any length of time. I had more luck just soaking the cap in soapy warm water and then rinsing it off, versus using the dishwasher.
A few tips:
- Do not fill beyond the line indicated on the pouch – if you are using a very thick food such as Greek Yogurt and you overfill the pouch it may leak.
- Make sure when you give the pouch to a little one that that they have the nozzle in their mouth before they start to squeeze the pouch. If the little one takes a full pouch and squeezes it really hard before placing the nozzle in their mouth, you may have a food volcano, which does certainly make a mess. It only happened to us once, but it was in the middle of the OB office and with great flourish and accompanying mess making it a very memorable event!
- Overall, we love Yummi Pouches and heartily recommend them to friends and family. They are on our list for Christmas Gifts for new Moms this year!
